Another year, Another SEMA. The SOBs have been going to SEMA for along time now. Over half our lives. We can even remember having to be snuck in to see the show because we weren’t old enough to be allowed in. Now we’re plenty old enough and it was another great time. Even though exhibitor attendance has gone down over the last few years it’s still a great place to meet new people and run into a lot of the old guys that you deal with over the course of a year. Running into friends and colleagues is the best part of SEMA. We had a very productive week out in Vegas and it was good to run into old time friends like Thom Taylor, Eric Brockmeyer, and Bobby Alloway.

This year was extra special. Our wheel building venture expanded this year with a new line and a new partner. Genuine Boyds has team up with Savini. Savini is a top notch 3pc company and we are happy to team up with them to take the Boyd Look in a whole new direction.

ANAHEIM, CA, November 06, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ — The new wheels targeted at the Muscle Car, and Pro Touring markets are forged billet centers, are constructed of 6061 aluminum alloy, and contribute great strength while keeping weight low for your high performance machine. In addition, 6061 alloy is more resistant to surface corrosion then 5000 series alloys. The added ductility makes for a wheel with a long lifespan, even when punished by a modern G-machine. The strength, durability, and elegance of these forged centers are designed using exhaustive testing and proprietary forging and heat-treating techniques. Exceeding JWL, DOT, and SAE standards, a wheel center forged from 6061 alloy can withstand fatigue resting to maximum load with no loss of strength and with a total absence of any type of failure or deterioration, making them your best choice for any quality three-piece modular wheel. The rim shells are TPMS compatible, CNC-machined, and able to absorb the horsepower of today’s Hot Rods and Muscle Cars. The new wheel line will supply 18, 19, 20, and 22-inch diameters with widths from 7 to 15 inches.

These superior forged wheels will meet nearly any high performance or custom need with classic Boyd Coddington style. “At Genuine Boyds, ‘high tech’ is a serious commitment to state of the art quality derived from up-to-the-minute technology, not just a buzzword for add-on styling”, said Boyd Coddington, Jr., President of Genuine Boyds, Coddington continued, “SAVINI is the leader in the three piece wheel industry. Their commitment to quality and design make them the perfect partner to produce our three piece wheels for the Hot Rod, Muscle Car, and Pro Touring markets.”

SAVINI Forged Wheels offers custom virtual fitment to accommodate all vehicle applications. In addition, custom finishes such as chrome, brushed aluminum, carbon fiber, and custom colors are easily accommodated. SAVINI/Boyds wheels are CNC machined and assembled and checked with CMM quality control in house.

Greg Kim, President of SAVINI, said: “The excitement is high as this new wheel team gears up for the SEMA show, and prepares to supply the Hot Rod and Performance enthusiasts with state of the art construction and performance, while meeting the needs for classic ‘Hot Rod’ style.

Back in 1993 at the height of the sport truck movement our father took on a project for Eddie Van Halen to build him a truck that he could run around in. Eddie wanted a Boyd Coddington built sport truck. So the Chip Foose drawn ‘Boyd Hauler’ was born. The Boyd Hauler featured an LT-1 engine, Corvette independent rear suspension, billet grille, smooth front bumpers and rear roll pan. What added the Van Halen touch were the red paint and asymetrical wheels and graphics that matched the signature Eddie Van Halen Frankenstein Guitar paint scheme.

Well after 16 years the truck has found it’s way over to American Hot Rods in Orange, CA. American Hot Rods is owned by Dwayne Mayer and Bernt Karlson. After a short stint at West Coast Customs Dwayne decided that the best option for him and his way of building hot rods was to open up his own shop.

Dwayne’s main task with the Boyd Hauler is to restore it to it’s original state while making some much needed updates with larger diameter wheels and newer style guitar inspired graphics. The truck is currently being worked on at American Hot Rods and will be ready to take to the Barret-Jackson auction in Scottsdale next year. Stay tuned for more updates.

Chas Cochran of Shaw Custom Rods sent us these photos of the replica model that he built of the 1961 Chevy Impala that was featured on the show.

There were 4 cars built. The first of 4 cars that was built was given to our father at the GoodGuys Nationals in Columbus Ohio back in 2007. The car also won an award in the model car show at the same event for Best Pro Street. The second car was given to Lee Hayes, who was Roy the metal masters helper. Chas was able to build this replica with the help from Todd Emmons, Greg, and the guys at the shop with photos. The paint is from Denver Custom Color so it matches exactly to the original car. The interior was done in high density foam and all hand made. The engine has every detail done to it that could have been done to make it like the original. This car also was on hand at the GSL XXII which is compared to the world nationals of model car building and it was able to get a 4th place in class. It also won the Goodguys Rod and Custom “Model D’elgance” award. Since May 2009 it has also taken two more 1st place awards and will be put into the Model Car Museum in Salt Lake City UT in August of this year.

Chas did a really good job and we hope to see more from him.

A few weeks back I headed over to Poor Boys Hot Rods in La Habra to see what Dan Sobieski was up to. Dan worked for our dad for a number of years and has opened up a shop in what was our dad’s old body shop. Dan had a little secret hidden in his paint booth that was a really pleasant surprise. Amidst all the hot rods and muscle cars was a gem right out of American automotive history. A 1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt. A concept car which was only 1 of 5 ever built and only 1 of 4 known to exist. The car belongs to long time Boyd Coddington customer, Dr. Gerard Depersio. Doc had brought it over to Dan’s after having it for some time to get some special treatment and to get it finished and ready for Pebble Beach.

Dan first went to task on getting all the exterior trim hand fabricated and fit. This was the only car to have the copper bumpers and trim with the 2 tone copper and green paint. After it was hand formed it was brushed and clear coated to lock in the soft brushed copper finish. The electric top was re-designed and fit. After finishing up with the engine and the front and rear suspension the stunning exterior paint was finished.

I knew when I saw this car that it was something special. When we live in a time where large scale CNC machines cut out huge blocks of foam into full blown vehicle mock ups and concept cars are put together in weeks and not years it’s really special to sit back and look at a car like this built 68 years and appreciate all the work that went into making just five of these to present to the public for it’s one chance to become a production car. If you want to get a chance to see this Thunderbolt in person you can go to Pebble Beach this August. If your looking to buy don’t let the name of the shop fool you. The asking price is 2.9mil.

Artur Schneidereit from Germany sent us these cool pics of a couple tribute model cars he has built. Artur built a replica of the Boyd Coddington Tribute Cuda that Duane and West Coast Customs built and a copy of Al De Orleans Al Camino. Artur did a great job with the Cuda and even went as far to put the stereo system and 3pc wheels on it. The Al Camino was pretty good too even though he wasn’t able to start with the same year El Camino. Artur’s next project is the Ghetto Princess. I have seen some of the work in progress pics and I can’t wait to see the finished car

Gregg and I went down to Del Mar this weekend to pick the 2009 Boyd Coddington Memorial Award winner. We arrived on Saturday to see long lines to get in and tons of people walking around. It was good to see the massive crowds and what seemed to be the biggest Goodguys Del Mar show to date. Lately it seems doom and gloom with the economy but the networks should have turned out to report on what a great turnout was happening at Del Mar. The weather was beautiful all weekend. As we walked around to look at all the cars I realized that our task of picking just one car to win the award was going to be tough. Picking 10 cars would have been tough. Gregg and I wanted to make sure that the award went to a vehicle that really stood out from the crowd. One that wasn’t trendy and that was something our dad would have thought was really cool. As we made it around the show for the second time we came across this car that really stood out to us. That car was Art Alvarez’s 1965 2 door Chevelle Wagon. It stood out for a few reasons. For one reason its a rare car. Not of alot of these 2 door wagons were built in the 60’s. It was clean and simple and had one of the nicest smooth as glass paint jobs at the show. Art did everything to this car that our father would have done and it really represented what making a car clean and cool is all about. Newer ZZ 383 motor, Hotchkis suspension, Baer brakes, Schott Billet Wheels, and updated but period correct interior. Art stuck to the Boyd 101 formula and it worked. Make it sit right, put some muscle in it but not too much, put some billet wheels on it, nice paint, and keep it clean all the way through.

We really appreciate Goodguys for letting us continue our father’s legacy and to allow us to have this award at Del Mar in his honor. This is the 2nd annual award that has been given out at Del Mar and there will be many more to come. The award itself was pretty cool this year. Custom machined and anodized billet trophy with Chezoom mounted on the top.
